Interesting

Got this from Yahoo News. Food for thought:)EOLIA, Mo. - In local diners and truck stops, drivers talk about this little highway town with a word of warning. Watch your lead foot when driving through, they say. This is a speed trap town.

Eolia gained national recognition earlier this month when it was added to a rogue's gallery of speed traps listed on a Web site, speedtrap.org. That doesn't come as news to many residents, who are furious over a jump in speeding tickets being handed out under the new police chief who took over in November.
"You can be in Illinois or Iowa, and you mention Eolia, and they say: Oh — the speed trap," said Jerry Burbridge, a trucker who lives in Eolia, about 70 miles northwest of St. Louis.
Eolia Police Chief Jerry Sutton said he's just enforcing the law.
"Safety — it's a big thing with me. I would hate to see one child or one pedestrian get hurt in any way," Sutton said.
Eolia's situation is hardly unique. For isolated towns with crumbling streets, speeding tickets can be an important source of revenue. In Eolia, for example, a ticket for 1 mph over the limit costs $67.50 in fines and court costs. Missouri law lets cities keep all the revenue they collect from tickets.
Most speed trap towns have highways running through their city limits, providing steady access to out-of-towners who won't raise too big a stink when ticketed, said Eric Scrum with the National Motorists Association.
But handing out speeding tickets isn't always easy money. Eleven states have laws against speed traps, usually limiting the proportion of a city's budget that can come from tickets. And there's been backlash.
A prosecutor temporarily barred the town of Reed, Ark., from issuing tickets in 2004 because of speed trap complaints. In Coburg, Ore. in 2005, two municipal employees filed a $2 million lawsuit claiming the city fired them for not going along with a speed trap scheme. Web sites like speedtrap.org list towns with a reputation for ticketing and many drivers avoid them altogether.
Still, the financial incentive for giving tickets is clear. In Missouri, municipal governments set their own fines for speeding and keep all the money they collect from tickets issued in city limits, said Nancy Griggs, division director of court services for Missouri's Office of State Courts Administrator.
Griggs said some towns have been known to collect as much as 90 percent of city revenue from speeding tickets. The town of Curryville generated $133,507 from traffic violations in 2004, according to a state audit. Excluding money from a federal development grant, traffic violations accounted for more than half of Curryville's budget that year.
Highway 54 runs through the middle of Curryville, in rural northeast Missouri, becoming the town's Main Street as the speed limit drops from 55 mph to 35 mph over about a half-mile stretch.
Mayor Bill Dixon remembers when the city gave 100 tickets a month, but he says things have changed. The city recently hired Charles Francis as its new police chief — he says he writes about nine to 15 tickets a month.
Convenience store owner Ellis Feith worries Curryville's past ticketing may have caught up with the city. Feith says traffic used to be heavy on the weekends, but now drivers bypass the town and Feith's store.
"If you build a town on giving tickets, you're asking for trouble in the long run," Feith said.
Business owners in Eolia worry the same fate might await them. Debbie Reading said business has fallen off steeply at her beauty salon.
"People are just getting pulled over for piddly little things," Reading said. "They actually tell us they don't want to come over here and get their hair cut because they're scared."

Friday night

Ok, it is Friday night, and I don't have a date. Oh well, life is too short to worry about such unimportant, trivial matters as that. Yes, I am enjoying the cable television VERY much, but as far as the appliances at my house goes, the computer is still the Queen. The BOSS. Yes, I said Queen, because I really do believe that my computer is a female. She even has a name: Josephine. Go ahead, laugh if you will. Kind of like people that name their cars or their boats. I named my computer. I felt like naming her, so there. P.S. go ahead and laugh if you want to. I am:) :) :)

Cable Tv 2

I had a little trouble, but now I am HOOKED up. No HBO, but I have the channels that I want, and it won't break me. I get to watch my crime shows again. YIPPEEEEE!

Cable television

I finally broke down and ordered cable tv today. Yes, I am weak. Could not go for even a year with out cable. But in my defense, last time I had it, I just HAD to go with all of the premium channels, so my cable television bill was something like 80-90 bucks a month. It was just too high, so I just withdrew from it completely. Now, after tonight, I have to fix my remote and figure out how to put the thing together after I get my cable box. The bill is only going to be about 40 bucks a month. I won't get the premium channels like HBO, but that is ok because I do not want them anymore anyway. I will get the History channel, Courttv, and the crime dramas I like. I hope that I can get all of the cables together. I am just not very mechanically inclined, and sometimes I get confused as hell on directions. Wish me luck.

For Hugh..

Sorry that the pic is too small. It is supposed to be a pic of a devil from the movie 'Hostel" (if you have seen the movie, you would know what it isLOL) and ty for the well wishes on Zucker. Turns out she is fine. Has to take some antibiotics for a bladder infection though.

Debates I would LOVE to hear

Rush Limbaugh vs Ed Schultz, Sean Hannity vs Jerry Springer, Glenn Beck vs Randy Rhoades.. man , those would be WILD!

Vet

I have to take my furbaby Zucker to the vet this morning. She is having a problem with her eyes and she may possibly have a kidney infection. For those of you that do not know, Zucker is a great big female German Shepherd that I have. Sharp as a tack, nothing to mess with if you are trying to break into my home, but a big slobbering baby once you get to know her. She weighs about a hundred pounds. Oh and Hugh, that tiny picture that you see is a buddy icon from the movie 'Hostel'.

Mementos

I recieved some more childhood mementos from my father today at the office. He is going through boxes of things that both sets of my grandparents kept when My sibs and I were kids. Valentines, letters, crayon drawings, postcards, etc. It is kind of neat to sort of go back in time and see them. All of my grandparents died years ago. It is amazing that they kept all of these things! To see my three year old childish handwriting now almost 35 years later is funny. I mean funny, and cute. I intend to keep these mementos for a long time.

The Beatles and talk radio

I am listening to the White Album now. Great album. That is the kind of music that I like. That and Elvis. More of an Elvis fan.. but I digress.. Cry baby Cry is a sad song.. If you do not have the music, I suggest that you download it(legally of course)..Helter Skelter is also a great song( Its about an amusement park ride, not murder) . I mostly listen to my entertainment these days. I listen to talk radio. I listen to Glenn Beck. I do not always agree with him, but I think that he is funny as hell. I listen to Rush Limbaugh. I also listen to Jerry Springer. I think that Jerry Springer is one of the most intelligent people on talk radio. I listen to Al Franken on Air America radio. I say the same about him that I do about Limbaugh. Don't always agree, but I like to listen to different opinions on political issues.

Not the greatest write

I have checked out some other blogs on the web, and I notice that a lot of the bloggers are much better writers than I am. Some are funny as hell, too. I am trying to learn how to be a better writer, perhaps I could take some lessons from somebody. I have added this blog address to my aim screenname( RedStateKansan37@aim.com) so maybe I will get some more feedback now. Hugh, if you are reading this, just wish to let you know that I appreciate your comments and even criticism if you have it. It rained on this beautiful Sunday morning, and life is good. I went to church this evening, and I did not get any traffic tickets this time(ha). I have a court date set for the first part of April for the diversion. Not much fun, but I want to keep a clean record. I have not had cable television in quite some time. I do have a television, but I never watch it. I have taken to watching dvds of my favourite old television shows on my computer. Shows like Chico and the man, Three's Company, that sort of thing. When I had cable, I really only watched two channels, HBO and Courttv. Maybe I would watch The History Channel. I could not understand today's tv shows anyway. I never watched that show American Idol, because it just never held any interest for me. I once tried about 15 minutes of Desperate Housewives, and I got bored. Never again. And I never cared too much for Oprah. What can I say, except that I work. I don't really care too much for today's music, either. LOL, maybe I am just getting old.

Back on track

Hello. My blog is up and working! Yes! Great because I have a lot to say tonight. Today at work, my father handed me some old letters and a keepsake that I made for my grandparents back in 1981. Memories came back to me in little bits and pieces. There is this porcelain Bible that I painted with an inscription on it that I made in Sunday school class in Arkansas. There are some letters save that an eleven year old me sent to my grandparents, written in my eleven year old hand writing in large pencil letters. Somewhat awkward writing, but now that I look back on it, it was pretty good. All of my grandparents are now dead. I miss them very much. Along with those letters and the trinket were some of my old report cards and grade reports from grade school, Jr High , and high school. Looking back, over all, I was not a bad student( B average) . There were progress reports going back as far as 1977. Wow. Time does fly. I was a pretty good student, but a social butterfly I was not. I was VERY painfully shy and awkward and I did not have many friends. Very self conscious back then. I was a day dreamer. Then there were letters that I sent to my family when I was in the hospital for a year and 3 months. Grade school was good. Middle school and Jr High were absolute hell. High School and college were a vast improvement from Middle and Jr High. I graduated from High School in 1987, and then went to Washburn University for a while, then transferred to Kansas State University for a year. That was back in 1991 or 92 I believe. I did not graduate from college, wich is ok by me. I am happy just where I am right now:)

Music

I downloaded some music from walmart.com last night and the night before. I don't really like shopping at walmart, but at 88 cents a song, that price really cannot be beaten. I like every kind of music except for rap. I downloaded Elvis, Amy Grant, Three Dog Night, Marvin Gaye, Joss Stone, and Little Feat among others. I really like gospel music. What kind of music do you folks like? I like AC/DC.. 'You shook me all night long'.. VERY sexy song.. puts me in a good sort of groove:)

I have returned

Ok, From now on, I am going to add to this blog every day. More like every evening. Yes, I know that mine is probably more boring than most, but this is my life right now. Boring, but uncomplicated. I was supposed to meet Dennis tonight for a little romp, but we never did set a time and frankly I am a little too tired right now. Dennis is a nice guy, but just not the marrying type. I rarely ever see him any more. He is on the road a lot, though he lives close by. Honestly, I think that I should just move on. I am thinking of joining some singles clubs at a local church. I like church activities, and it gets me away from the computer. I love my work, and my time alone, but it is nice to get out and meet with people occassionally. Oh yes, I want to say a big HELLO to Hugh. Thanks for leaving the nice, uplifting messages. I really like them. You seem like a very kind hearted person. Thank you.

Today is payday

I got paid today. Tonight I am paying bills, and working my way out of debt. I don't have much in the way of debt, just a car loan, and a little bit on credit cards. The house and everything else is paid for, plus I am putting a little bit away for savings. I even have a Roth IRA that I started a few years ago. Money is one of my favourite subjects. On Saturdays while I am in the office at work, I listen to Dave Ramsey. He is a financial expert that I hear on XM radio. ( Hows that for a plug, huh?) He is a bit of a preacher, and I disagree with him on the issue of credit cards, but all in all, I think that he is pretty good. In listening to him talk to and listen to his callers on the radio, I do get the idea that he does care about people. He has stated that long ago, he was broke, and had big debt (even filed for bankruptcy) twenty some odd years ago, now he is out of debt and trying to help others do the same with this thing called "Total Money Make Over'. Occassionally I also listen to Bruce Williams.

Prolife bumpersticker assumptions

As I was driving home from work the other day, I noticed that the car in front of me had a bumpersticker that said 'Smile.. your parents were Prolife'. I had to laugh because it was so darn funny. How in the hell would anyone know this besides my parents? Your parents ? I believe that the car owners were trying to make some sort of statement here, but I am not exactly sure what the hell it was, because , ( and I am speaking for myself here) I was a wanted pregnancy. My parents CHOSE to give birth. To my brother, sister and I. That would make them ProChoice by default. Prolifers(ok not all but most) sure seem to like to make a lot of assumptions about other people. What they(most) do not seem to understand is that some women CHOOSE to give birth.

Rain!

It rained this morning. A nice hard rain. And it is Sunday morning. I love life:)

Adding

My first and second pap smears hurt like hell and I screamed very loudly if that tells you anything.

I will admit and this thing I am terrified of.

I will admit this. I am over weight. Ok, I am more than over weight, I am obese. I have diabetes. I did go see a doctor about it, a bariatrician that put me on an 800 calorie a day diet, and I did lose a lot of weight, but after doing that for a year, I had to quit because I didn't lose enough, and someone else was paying for it( as a gift) and it was very expensive program. The doctor also had me taking some vitamin supplememnts that I did not like. I had to buy the food there in the office. So I gave up going to that doctor. I still see a regular doctor for physicals and such. I take meds for diabetes. I get discouraged. I was surfing the web tonight and found info on the bariatric surgery called gastric bypass, or something like that. It looks really scary to me. Anything about 'going under the needle' scares me. Anything about surgery and anesthesia scares me. Once I had to have oral surgery done to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed. When I found out that I would have to have a tiny IV inserted, I kind of freaked. The staff at the dental office did calm my worries when I found out. The day of my surgery, just as I was starting to drift off, I was still not quite out of it, I sort of mentally panicked and started having these irrational thoughts'GET THIS THING OUT OF ME'! And it was all I could do to keep from ripping that tiny IV out of my finger. I didn't, but I cannot imagine what would have happened if I had a bigger one in me. I am amazed at other people. I hear women talk about going through childbirth onne day and are up around and walking the next day and chatting. Things like that scare the shit right outta me.(Except regular visits to the dentist which I dont mind) I think that I have a low pain threshhold. Maybe I am crazy, but the idea of any kind of surgery or giving birth scares the hell outta me

From senditout.com

A man walks up to the bar with an ostrich behind him, and as he sits, the bartender asks for their order.

The man says, "I'll have a beer" and turns to the ostrich. "What's yours?" "I'll have a beer too" says the ostrich.
The bartender pours the beer and says "That will be $3.40 please," and the man reaches into his pocket and pays with the exact change for payment.

The next day, the man and the ostrich come again, and the man says "I'll have a beer," and the ostrich says "I'll have the same." Once again the man reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change.

This became a routine until late one evening, the two enter again. "The usual?" asks the bartender."Well, it's close to last call, so I'll have a large Scotch" says the man. "Same for me" says the ostrich. "That will be $7.20" says the bartender. Once again the man pulls exact change out of his pocket and places it on the bar.

The bartender can't hold back his curiosity any longer. "Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact change out of your pocket every time?"

"Well," says the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the attic and I found this old lamp. When I rubbed it a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever needed to pay for anything, I just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money will be there."

"That's brilliant!" says the bartender. "Most people would wish for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!""That's right! Whether it's a gallon of milk, or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there," says the man.
"That's fantastic!" says the bartender. "You are a genius! ... Oh, one other thing sir, what's with the ostrich?"

The man replies, "Oh, my second wish was for a chick with long legs."

Sundays

I love Sundays. They are my favourite day of the week! I especially love Sunday mornings when it rains a lot. I hope that there are a lot of rainy Sunday Mornings this Spring. No hurry mornings where you can sleep in while listening to the sound of the rain hitting the roof.Sleep late, fix breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and orange juice. Yum! Then hit the shower. Watch a little television or surf the internet. Check email, then go back to bed.. St Patrick's Day is coming up. It is one of my favourite holidays, and I hope that it falls on a Sunday. Easter, another one of my favourites, always falls on a Sunday. I love this holiday. I get to spend it with my family and I do not have to worry at all about work. Joy!

I just DO NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME UNDERSTAND

I just do not for the very life of me understand why some fools make such a big issue of this subject. I myself do believe in a woman's right to choose abortion, but it is HER business. IT IS JUST A SIMPLE MEDICAL PROCEDURE! Why all of this whining and gnashing of teeth about a simple medical procedure that is as difficult(most of the time) as getting a cavity filled at the local dental office.

Pardon me

I owe Jeff a phone call. I owe Jeff many phone calls. I did call him last Saturday after work to possibly go to a movie, but he wasn't home. Jeff and I have gotten rather physical in the past, which usually did start with back rubs and then front rubs and well, you take it from there LOL

My day in court

Well, I took care of it. The traffic ticket I mean. I get to have my day in court. April 4th. Yes. I am attempting to get a diversion, and I go before a judge. I think that this might even be a good expirience for me, because I will get a chance to see court in action(again). This is traffic court, so it is nothing bigtime. The last time I saw a courtroom was about a year and a half ago when I was selected for jury duty. It was an assault case. I really did learn quite a bit about our criminal justice system.

Traffic ticket/citation

Left for church tonight at about 5:55 p.m. Would you believe that I got a speeding ticket on the way there? I am just driving along, almost right after I pulled out of my driveway, I get out on to the street, and after a minute or two, I hear sirens, look in my rear view mirror, and there he is. We pull over. After I give him my driver's license and insurance information, he asks if I know why I was pulled over. I say, no. He says that I was going twelve miles over the speed limit. He asked me where I was going in such a hurry, and I embarrassingly tell him that I am going to church. I was embarrassed to say that, because officers probably hear replies like that all of the time from people they pull over, but I was telling the truth. I wont give out the officers name or the name of the church for privacy reasons. I will also pay the seventy five dollar fine. I give the officer no trouble whatsoever, secretly hoping that he will just let me off with a warning, but when I see him coming back with the citation on his clipboard. No chance. I get a seventy five dollar fine. " You sign here, this is not an admittance of guilt".I comply, he hands me a copy, he smiles at me( what a handsome face he had, too!) I smile back, and manage to mumble an apology. I think that men in uniforms look sexy( I didn't tell him that!) He says'no need to apologize to me, just slow down'. I will.

Actor Don Knotts Dies at 81
Saturday February 25 5:42 PM ET

Don Knotts, the skinny, lovable nerd who kept generations of television audiences laughing as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show," has died. He was 81.

Knotts died Friday night of pulmonary and respiratory complications at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, said Paul Ward, a spokesman for the cable network TV Land, which airs "The Andy Griffith Show," and another Knotts hit, "Three's Company."

Unspecified health problems had forced him to cancel an appearance in his native Morgantown in August 2005.

The West Virginia-born actor's half-century career included seven TV series and more than 25 films, but it was the Griffith show that brought him TV immortality and five Emmies.

The show ran from 1960-68, and was in the top 10 of the Nielsen ratings each season, including a No. 1 ranking its final year. It is one of only three series in TV history to bow out at the top: The others are "I Love Lucy" and "Seinfeld." The 249 episodes have appeared frequently in reruns and have spawned a large, active network of fan clubs.

As the bug-eyed deputy to Griffith, Knotts carried in his shirt pocket the one bullet he was allowed after shooting himself in the foot. The constant fumbling, a recurring sight gag, was typical of his self-deprecating humor.

Knotts, whose shy, soft-spoken manner was unlike his high-strung characters, once said he was most proud of the Fife character and doesn't mind being remembered that way.

His favorite episodes, he said, were "The Pickle Story," where Aunt Bea makes pickles no one can eat, and "Barney and the Choir," where no one can stop him from singing.

"I can't sing. It makes me sad that I can't sing or dance well enough to be in a musical, but I'm just not talented in that way," he lamented. "It's one of my weaknesses."

A while

Sorry that I have not posted here in a while. Have been sort of b usy with work, etc. Finally got to see Brokeback Mountain last night. Great film. Sorta long, and kinda sad. Went out to dinner at Perkin's afterwards. Had a nice meal. No barking furbabies to deal with, so I had a little time to myself. Thought about calling Den, then decided against it. He has his life and I have mine. I still have to return calls that Jeff made to me from last weekend. Man, I hope that he does not think that I am being rude or ignoring him. Generally, I do not care too much for cell phones. I think that they are too much of a distraction, and yes, I am a hypocrite in this area. I have a cell phone. I think that somefolks do get obsessive about telephone calls, and spend 45 minutes just chatting on a conversation that should only take about 5. I hate it when folks talk on the phone while they are driving. What could possibly be more important than paying attention to the road?

For all of the people

For all of the people who were upset when the Danish newspaper printed those cartoons: That is exactly what they are! Cartoons. Get over it! As for the rioters: YOU ARE STUPID. Killing people over stupid cartoons is beyond stupid! Yes, I understand that the the depictions may have been offensive to some, but that is absolutely NO reason to riot and kill each other. We here in the United States are constantly depicting our leaders in a similar fashion, and we don't act in such a manner. Its called HUMOR. Look into it. Its also called freedom of expression. That would be a good thing to look into as well.

Comments: Sharon appeared with me and Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch on our old show... F Troop. What a trooper Sharon was. In one scene of the show Sharon had to ride the same horse with Forrest. Of course she rode behind Forrest and he would pass gas all the time because he only ate beans and beef jerky. He said it was to stay in charactor of a ninetenth century soldier. Because of technical problems the scene needed to be reshot five or six times. When things were finaly "in the can", Sharon got off the horse, raised its tail and put her nose up to the horses, patute. She said she needed some fresh air after riding behind Forrest all afternoon. Now this really broke up the crew, who were tired and frustrated by all the delays. Mr. Roman Polanski, who was directing this episode, thought it would be funny if he did the same thing. After a step ladder was found, Roman put his face up to the horses' ass and promptly received a faceful of horse s---. After wiping his face, the soon to be famous director said... "Zees iz not unlike Fa-rench cooking."
Thanks for letting me share, Ken.

This song always cheers me up

This song always cheers me up when I am in a bad mood. It says take life easy! The Eagles Well, I'm a runnin' down the road, tryin' to loosen my load,
I've got seven women on my mind:
four that wanna own me, two that wanna stone me,
one says she's a friend of mine.
Take it easy, take it easy,
don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy.
Lighten up while you still can, don't even try to understand,
just find a place to make your stand and take it easy.

Well, I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
and such a fine sight to see:
it's a girl, my Lord, in a flat bed Ford
slowin' down to take a look at me.
Come on, baby, don't say maybe.
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me.
We may lose and we may win though we will never be here again.
So open up, I'm climbin' in, so take it easy.

Well, I'm a runnin' down the road, tryin' to loosen my load,
got a world of trouble on my mind.
Lookin' for a lover who won't blow my cover,
she's so hard to find.
Take it easy, take it easy,
don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy.
Come on, baby, don't say maybe.
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me.
Oh, we got it easy,
we oughta take it easy.

I don't understand today's music

Frankly, I cannot understand today's music. I cannot name any 'new' music groups of today. I tried listening to it a few times, and frankly I cannot understand what is being sung. Just what in the hell does 'pimp my ride' mean, anyway? I HATE rap music. I will listen to just about anything but rap. It sucks. I like music from the sixties and seventies like The Moody Blues and Three Dog Night. I always listen to seventies soft rock.

Blogger Gains Following With Iraq Reports By MITCH STACY, Associated Press Writer
Sun Feb 5, 6:48 AM ET

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - He didn't have to go, it wasn't his job and nobody paid him to do it. But Michael Yon says he went to Iraq because he wanted to see for himself what was happening in the war zone.

The 41-year-old former Green Beret and author was embedded as a freelance journalist with troops last year and used an Internet blog to report on car bombs, firefights and fallen soldiers. He also wrote about acts of compassion and heroism, small triumphs in the country's crawl toward democracy and the gritty inner workings of the military.

Yon's dispatches have been extolled by readers as gutsy and honest reporting. His blog has been quoted by major newspapers and TV news networks, and he has drawn comparisons to Ernie Pyle, the renowned World War II correspondent who shared the trenches with fighting soldiers.

Yon followed the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment through battles against insurgents in Mosul. The unit, which is based at Fort Lewis, Wash., is known as the "Deuce Four."

"Deuce Four is an overwhelmingly aggressive and effective unit, and they believe the best defense is a dead enemy," Yon wrote in one dispatch. "They are constantly thinking up innovative, unique and effective ways to kill or capture the enemy; proactive not reactive."

In May, a poignant photo he shot of a soldier cradling a dying Iraqi girl after an explosion brought more attention to Yon's mission of telling the world about the war.

He crossed the line from observer to participant at one point.

During a firefight in downtown Mosul in August, Yon and witnesses say he picked up an M4 rifle, reloaded and fired three times at insurgents as two battalion leaders lay wounded nearby. His actions brought a stern reprimand from the Army.

Yon's blog is unflinchingly pro-military, but he has frequently criticized Army public affairs officers over how news out of Iraq is managed. He hasn't shied away from describing the horrors of war, and he once wrote about an Iraqi taxi driver killed by U.S. troops during a fire fight.

"They know I don't follow the party line," says the soft-spoken Yon, whose broad, solid physique makes him seem taller than 5 feet 6 inches. "Like when our guys get killed, I'll write about it and I'll write about it the way it really happened, which sometimes is pretty graphic."

Lt. Col. Erik Kurilla, a Deuce Four commander wounded in the downtown Mosul battle, says Yon was effective because he stayed with the unit longer than most embedded reporters.

"Mike, by spending five months with us, understood the unit, the idiosyncrasies, the good and the bad, and how we made decisions," Kurilla says. "You don't get that from coming in for 48 or 72 hours."

A native of Winter Haven in central Florida, Yon is a professional adventurer of sorts. His tales range from establishing a vending business in Poland to tracking cannibals in India, all after serving five years in the Army in the 1980s. In 2000, he self-published a memoir called "Danger Close."

Yon went to Iraq a year ago, began blogging a few weeks later and gained a strong Internet following within a few months. In the last four months of 2005, his site logged around 1.5 million hits.

Not being a journalist by trade, Yon says he initially had trouble being an objective observer when the explosions and gunfire started.

"In the beginning I would just help people, and I wouldn't get any photos," he says. "I realized that I could do a lot more with my camera and my pen than I could with my hands, and so I disciplined myself to just stay out of the way and photograph, unless somebody really, really needs me."

He felt that was the case in the downtown Mosul battle. Before picking up the rifle, he shot photos of Kurilla crumpling to the ground as an insurgent's bullets pierced both his legs and an arm.

Kurilla and the rest of the Deuce Four are home now, with dozens of Purple Hearts among them. Yon has been interviewing them for a book about the unit and the battles in Mosul.

He recently bought new body armor and, if all goes as planned, he'll return to Iraq later this year.

"It's a very complicated world and you can't learn about it by sitting back and reading about it," Yon says. "Not the way I wanted to learn about it anyway."

Sick and tired of her

Hey, am I the only one that is sick and tired of Cindy Sheehan? I mean, I at first felt sorry for herbecause she lost her kid, but now I think that she is milking it for all it is worth. Now I hear that she has gone to another country and complaining about the United States? Please anyone, correct me if I am wrong. I understood that she was a political activist before the war. Now she is running for political office??? What on God's green earth could she ever do? I certainly wouldn't vote for her. Personally, I think that she is doing a great disservice to her kids memory and a disservice to our Troops. I am seriously tired of seeing her name all over the papers, news, and other media. I understand that it is painful to lose a loved one, but for Chrissakes, she isn't the only one who has!::deep breath:: Ok that is the last time I will mention her name on this blog. I must live my own life.

Computer Follies.

This came in my email box tonight. I think that you will enjoy it:)

Compaq is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "Press Return Key" because of the flood of calls asking where the "Any" key is.

AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in.

Another Compaq technician received a call from a man complaining that the system wouldn't read word processing files from his old diskettes. After trouble-shooting for magnets and heat failed to diagnose the problem, it was found that the customer had labeled the diskettes, then rolled them into the typewriter to type the labels.

A Dell technician advised his customer to put his troubled floppy back in the drive and close the door. The customer asked the technician to hold on, and was heard putting the phone down, getting up and crossing the room to close the door to his room.

Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his tub with soap and water and soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing them individually.

A confused caller to IBM was having troubles printing documents. He told the technician that the computer had said it couldn't find printer. The user had also tried turning the computer screen to face the printer - but that his computer still couldn't see the printer.

An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happens." The foot pedal turned out to be the computer's mouse.

Podiatrist

I am going to the podiatrist tomorrow afternoon. You know, people should take better care of their feet, particularly if they are diabetic like me. My second toe on my left foot has an ingrown toenail, so that will have to be removed, and I think that it is a little bit painful. I used to get chronic ingrown toenails on my big toes, so much so that they would get infected and extremely painful. I finally tired of this and had some foot surgery to correct it. The doctor put some sort of chemical in between the nail and the toe to keep it growing back underneath the skin. I had to have something like ten shots in each foot. Man those did hurt something awful.

Joke

A rather old fashioned lady, always quite delicate and elegant, especially in her language, was planning a weeks holiday in Sydney with her husband, so she wrote to a particular camping ground and asked for a reservation.

She wanted to make sure that the camping ground was fully equipped, but didn't know quite how to ask about the toilet facilities. She just couldn't bring herself to write the word "toilet" in her letter.

After much thought, she finally came up with the old fashioned term "Bathroom closet" but when she wrote it down, she still thought she was being too forward, so she started all over again, rewrote the letter, and referred to the bathroom closet as the B.C.

"Does the camping ground have it's own B.C." is what she wrote.

Well, the camping ground owner wasn't a bit old fashioned, and he just couldn't figure out what the old lady was talking about, so he showed the letter around a few of the campers and the only thing they could come up with was that B.C. stood for Baptist Church, so he wrote the following reply.

Dear Madam,

I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I now take the pleasure of informing you that a B.C. is located nine miles north of our camping ground, and is capable of seating 250 people at one time.

I admit that it is quite a distance away if you are in the habit of going regularly but no doubt you will be pleased to know that a great number of campers go there and many take their lunches along and make a day of it. They usually arrive nice and early and stay quite late.

The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that there is a special supper planned there to raise money to buy more seats so that everyone will be able to sit in comfort.

I would like to say that it pains me very much not to be able to go more regularly, but it is surely no lack of desire on my part, just that I am so busy most of the time.

As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort to go, especially in the cold weather. If you decide to come down to our camping ground perhaps I could go with you the first time you go, sit with you and introduce you to all the other folks.

Remember this is a very friendly community

Police Nab Two in Serial Killings By JULIE WATSON, Associated Press Writer
Thu Jan 26, 2:33 PM ET

MEXICO CITY - Mexican police had two accused serial killers in custody Thursday — a female ex-wrestler suspected in the deaths of at least 10 elderly women, and a former soldier accused of torturing and killing at least four gay men.

The news was shocking to a city that, although accustomed to crime, rarely sees serial killings.

On Wednesday, a former professional wrestler, originally mistaken for a man, was captured while fleeing a house where an 82-year-old woman had been strangled with a stethoscope.

Mexico City Attorney General Bernardo Batiz said Thursday that Juana Barraza, 48, has been linked to the deaths of at least 10 elderly women in Mexico City, raising hopes that the capital's notorious "Little Old Lady Killer" was finally in custody.

Authorities say they have enough evidence to believe that Barraza is the "Mataviejitas" who has been terrorizing elderly residents here for two years.

She was captured while running from a house where Ana Maria Reyes had just been strangled. During her arrest, she told police and reporters that she killed Reyes but not the other victims. Officers allowed reporters to interview the suspect at the scene, a standard practice in Mexico.

"Yes, I did it," she said, smiling at the television cameras. She quickly added: "Just because I'm going to pay for it, that doesn't mean they're going to hang all the crimes on me."

Batiz told the Televisa network that Barraza admitted killing three other women. He said Barraza's fingerprints matched those left at the scenes of a total of 10 killings and one attempted murder.

Police had suspected that the killer was a man dressed as a woman, and they spent months detaining, questioning and fingerprinting transvestites.

But now they say the stout Barraza is their prime suspect. She resembles police composite profiles and a sculpted rendering of the suspected serial killer — including a similar haircut and facial mole.

Ismael Alvarado Ruiz, one of two policemen who made the arrest, said a neighbor alerted them to Barraza.

"My partner and I caught her by the arms and took her back to the patrol car," Alvarado Ruiz said. "We went back to the house, and everything was scattered all around."

Police said Barraza was carrying a bag with a stethoscope, pension forms and a card identifying her as a social worker. Police have long believed that the killer gained access to victims' homes by offering to sign them up for pensions or other programs for the elderly.

But Barraza said she went to the victim's home to ask for work doing laundry.

"That's a lie. I wasn't carrying the documents they have there," she said.

She did not offer a motive, but told reporters, "You'll know why I did it when you read my statement to police."

One of Reyes' neighbors, 73-year-old Lourdes Medina, remembered the victim as a tidy, hardworking woman.

"This is very sad. It's not fair," Medina said. "This could have happened to me. I'm scared to walk on the street."

In a news conference Thursday, the other suspect, Raul Osiel Marroquin, described killing four gay men before his arrest Monday in Mexico City. Although there had been some reports of attacks against gays increasing, Marroquin's arrest was the first confirmation of a serial killer targeting homosexuals.

"I snuffed out four homosexuals that in some way were affecting society," he said while denying being homophobic.

He told reporters he would kill again, if given the chance, but he would "refine his methods." Police said he lured his victims away from bars, tortured them and hanged them. He allegedly carved a star into the forehead of one victim.

Marroquin also was accused of kidnapping two other gay men, but he released them after being paid a ransom of up to $11,500.

What do you think?

I got this from Yahoo news. Tell me what you think. I just watched a documentary called FARMINGVILLE. Very good. I do not know which side to take a stand on, both sides have their good points and their not so good points.PETER PRENGAMAN, Associated Press Writer
Sun Jan 22, 5:03 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - The immigrant day laborers who wait for work on street corners across the United States have families and attend church regularly, and the people who hire them are more likely to be individual homeowners than construction contractors.

The first nationwide study of day laborers also found that one in five has been injured on the job and nearly half have been cheated out of pay.

The study, the most detailed snapshot to date of the mostly Hispanic and often undocumented immigrants who've become a focal point in the immigration debate, was based on interviews of 2,660 workers at 264 hiring sites in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

The authors said they were surprised by the level of community involvement among men often thought of as transients.

"The day labor corner is not as disconnected from society as people think. It's seen as a shadow economy, but that's really not the case," said professor Nik Theodore of the University of Illinois at Chicago, one of three study authors. The others were from the University of California, Los Angeles, and New York's New School University.

Standing outside a Home Depot store in suburban Burbank on Sunday, 33-year-old Raul Sanchez said that when he's not working, or waiting for work, he's involved in a church and tried to start a soccer league for fellow day laborers. The native of Mexico has been in the United States seven years and lives with his wife and two children, ages 13 and 14.

Sometimes he worries about small work sites with little safety equipment.

"We know nobody is going to help us out if we get hurt," Sanchez said. "There are risks, but what are we going to do — not work?"

As often as not, a day laborer's employer will be an individual rather than a labor contractor.

Forty-nine percent of respondents said they were regularly hired by homeowners for everything from carpentry to gardening, with 43 percent getting jobs from construction contractors. Two-thirds said they are hired repeatedly by the same employer.

Based on their interviews and counts at each hiring site, the researchers estimate there are about 117,600 day laborers nationwide, but say that number is probably low. They said it would be impossible to count the number of hiring sites nationwide, since some spring up spontaneously.

Among the other findings based on the interviews conducted in July and August 2004:

_Three-fourths were illegal immigrants and most were Hispanic: 59 percent were from Mexico and 28 percent from other Central American countries.

_Just over half said they attended church regularly, 22 percent reported being involved in sports clubs and 26 percent said they participated in community centers.

_Nearly two-thirds had children, 36 percent were married and seven percent lived with a partner.

_More than 80 percent rely on day labor as their sole source of income, earning close to the 2005 federal poverty guideline of $12,830 for a family of two.

_Of the 20 percent who reported on-the-job injuries, more than half said they received no medical care because they couldn't afford it or their employer refused to cover them.

Cesar Martinez, 45, another of the people waiting for work at the Home Depot in Burbank, is a Guatemala native who has been in the United States for 15 years without legal documentation. He said he sends $300 to $500 home every month to support his six children, ages 2 to 14, but that sometimes an employer rips him off.

"I couldn't complain because I'm not here legally, but I was so angry because I need every cent," he said. "I'm always thinking, 'Are they going to pay me, am I going to get to work 8 hours on this job, will I get hurt doing it?'"

AP - 32 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The U.S. has no plans to raise the security threat level because of a new tape of Osama bin Laden saying al-Qaida is planning attacks, counterterrorism officials said Thursday. The White House firmly rejected bin Laden's suggestion of a negotiated truce. "We don't negotiate with terrorists," Vice President Dick Cheney said in a television interview. "I think you have to destroy them." Counterterror officials said they have seen no specific or credible intelligence to indicate an upcoming al-Qaida attack on the United States.

How I met him is a long story, lets just say that we hit it off right away. He has taught me many things such as how to keep a hubby happy( If I ever get married lol). Its pretty steamy , and raunchy, but I love the lessons. We have explored each others bodies, and D is very muscular. VERY muscular. It has been a while since I have had a 'lesson' but the lessons were so great and vast that I never forgot the techniques. He likes my frontside, too. VERY much. Next, I will tell you about my trip to Costa Rica

My romantic life

I plan on posting more about my romantic life here. Tomorrow.

Beddybye

Beddybye time for me now.

STUFF

I just purchased a new microwave. Whoo hoo. I kinda figured that I am poor without one, and I needed one tonight. I look around my house and I am amazed at the 'stuff' I have collected over the years. I need 'stuff'( Gawd how my father hates that word) and since I have this computer, I have more 'stuff'.Think about it. Poor people in the United States generally have more stuff than the poor people who live in foreign countries.

Microwave

I had to get rid of my microwave today. Last night, I went to put some food in it , and I hear these sparks starting to pop. Oh well I guess that it was about time for it to die. I think it was about 15 or 20 years old. I got it from my sister when I moved into my house almost 9 years ago. Oh well I hardly ev er used it anymore, so I will not miss it much. I put it out in the trash can tonight. Not even worth looking into fixing.I use my stove and oven more these days anyway, so I really dont need a microwave yet. When I do, I can always buy a new cheap one somewhere, maybe on line or at Sears. Nothing to worry about now.
